On Wednesday, the Atlanta Falcons officially announced the waiver of outside linebacker Dante Fowler Jr.
Dante Fowler Jr. restructured his contract with the team before the 2021 season and accepted a pay cut, but ultimately failed to reach any incentive bonus clause. He played in 14 games last season, starting 6 of them, and finished with 4.5 sacks. One of the incentive bonus terms is to complete 5 sacks.
Dante Fowler Jr. has played in 28 games for the Atlanta Falcons, and his minutes have been erratic late last season: sometimes he’s on half the defensive snaps, sometimes less than 40 percent.
Losing Dante Fowler Jr. would leave about $4.67 million in dead money in his salary, but free up other cap space.
Dante Fowler Jr., the third overall pick in the 2015 first round of the Jacksonville Jaguars, played in 91 career games, starting 40 of them. His best season was with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019, when he had 11.5 sacks.
